7 hours-long drag-king performance Come on bro!, is an investigation of manhood’s body gestures and movements with the reference of Zeybek dance which is a folkloric dance from Aegean region. The name comes from guerilla fighthers of the region lived between 17 – 20 centuries: Zeybeks. They fighted with a vengeance against non-muslim forces during the Turkish War of Independence and since then, they have seen as nationalist heroes.

Taking the folkloric Zeybek dance, the dance which has been one the references of the Turkish Republic as a starting point, in Come on bro! Leman Sevda Darıcıoğlu questions the lines between gender and imitation, the body and performativity as well as the relationships between nationalism and masculinity.

UNBOXING: MASCULINITIES*

Welcome to “unboxing: masculinities*”: The first discourse festival – “unboxing: masculinities*” of the final semester of the Drama in Education study program of the Hochschule Osnabrueck will take place on January 29 and 30.

The term masculinities stands for the question: What does it mean to be a man and does masculinity really only has something to do with men? – That is a topic we would like to bring into focus in the context of current debates about diversity and gender roles.

With performance lectures on everyday life with masculinity and workshops to reflect on our habits, with brilliant drag performances and gender-ambivalent photo series, we want to subject masculinities to an “unboxing”: Together we want to break out of boxes and stereotypes, blur boundaries, get rid of the limiting box walls of gender, look closer, reveal and unpack. In doing so, we want to provide a platform for engagement, whether you are already deep in the discourse or just getting started!
