Dominique Savitri BARON-BONARJEE
Dominique’s works – installations, moving image, sound works, performances, drawings – are the unfolding permutations of a recurring question about the alterity of the body: both, self-conscious identity – subject – and abstract materiality – object. Through existential Zen-like riddles, she brings the mystical practices of the Eastern psycho-technologies of ‘nonduality’, into a generative tension with contemporary systemic concerns, where the ‘poetics of activism’ become the inner choreographies of a spiritualized political body.
EEG technology becomes her ‘hacker/collaborator’, enabling observation of how systemic narratives are introjected into bodies. She seeks to subvert this through altered-states of consciousness. In her artworks, she deploys ‘rhythmic fields’, composed around threshold moments, convinced that the inner wobble ‘insights’ the politics and ethics for a more-than-human being.
She has shown work internationally, in galleries, festivals, biennales and public space, including at the Nakanojo Biennale in Japan, the Isamu Noguchi Room (Keio University) Tokyo, Galerie Wedding in Berlin, the Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC). She recently collaborated with Astrida Neimanis, author of ‘Bodies of Water’, for Lofoten International Arts Festival 2019; she presented her lecture-performance ‘Tales of Fabrication’ at the Tai Kwun Centre in Hong Kong for the ASAP Annual Symposium, and the accompanying film was screened at Tate Exchange, London. Her public space performances have been commissioned by Chisenhale Dance Space, London and Håb / Word of Warning in Manchester.
