Maria J. Monteiro

Maria J. Monteiro is a Portuguese performance maker and creative practitioner based in Glasgow. In 2012, she graduated from Acting at the Academia Contemporanea do Espectaculo, back in Porto. She is graduating from her studies at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in 2021, with a degree in BA(Hons) Contemporary Performance Practice. Her performance work stems from her fascination with pop culture, spirituality and surrealism. She questions the audience’s role and the artist’s function within performance art by curating non-hierarchical pieces. Her facilitation work is best described as experimental and participatory within educational contexts. Her main focus is working alongside educators and young people to spark holistic and creative learning opportunities. She is currently exploring how foreign language can be used in classrooms as a stimulus to develop autonomy, critical thinking, empathy and attainment.
